Wilmington, Delaware’s most populous city and it built on the place of Fort Christina, the earliest Swedish settlement in NA. Positioned on the convergence of the Christina River and Brandywine Creek, near where the Christina runs into the river of Delaware. History of Wilmington Delaware
This city was built on the place of Fort Christina. Wilmington was settled by the Delaware Indian or Lenape band led by Chief Mattahorn. The place was named Bear Place or Maax Waas Unk. It was named the Bear River as it streamed west to the Bear People who called as the Susquehannocks or People of Connestoga.

The Dutch spelled the Bear River and the area as Miguannan. When traders and settlers from Sweden under Peter Minuit came in 1638 on the Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip, they bought Maax Waas Unk from Mattahron and developed Fort Christina. The place was called The Rocks. It is situated near the base of Seventh Street. This fort served as headquarter of the New Sweden colony that consisted of the Delaware region (New Jersey and Pennsylvania at present) however. Some colonist stayed there. Doctor Timothy Stidham was a famous resident and doctor in Wilmington. Timothy was born in the year 1610 in Hammel, Denmark and grew in Gothenburg. He came in New Sweden in the year 1654 and the first doctor in Delaware.
